The Unknown Fear…

You only see a strip and in it are eyes. Cold as stainless steel. The rest of the head is black, as is the body. There’s no real clue. Is it a man or a woman? And it is an it to you in that moment, because you’re finding it hard to get your head around why anyone would wear that head-scarf–

That’s the attitude we’re facing. An attitude where half of our society is terrified because they can’t see a face. And who do we have to blame for this? Good question. The media play their part but come on, it’s us too. We just don’t know how to deal with it.

I was standing in a queue at Stansted Airport. Everyone was chatting amongst themselves, until a lady in a head-scarf turned up and they all stopped. When I say stopped I mean it literally. It was frightening how quiet it became, and you could almost hear the lady’s breathing step up a level.

Then she wandered away to another queue where there were less people. I wasn’t close enough to hear if the same thing happened or not, but from the looks on their faces there was no shortage of fear. Whispering started and that was just plain sad.

I don’t know how we’ll get over the idea that terrorists are everywhere among us. For as long as a small minority exist and there are newspapers to be sold, I suppose we have to live with the fact that people are people, and fear is just in us.
